Two Ocean’s Marathon Cape Town 2017: New Ballot Entry System for 21km Half Marathon

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon is one of the most iconic running events in the southern hemisphere, and so it is no surprise that all 16,000 Half Marathon entries sell out in just a few hours.

Until recently, if you didn’t secure your place within hours of registration opening, you would have no chance of getting your hands on a 21km golden ticket, but things are going to be different when entries open this year, when just like the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Two Oceans Marathon will change to a ballot style entry system.

Entries for Two Oceans Marathon

The ballot system is utilised across the world for mass-participation events such as the London Marathon and the New York Marathon, and so it makes perfect sense for the Two Oceans Marathon, commonly referred to as the ‘World’s Most Beautiful Marathon’, to do the same.

Since entries for the 2 Oceans Ultra 56km Marathon opened on 1st September, almost 3700 of the 11000 spots have been taken, and while this event always takes longer to fill up than the shorter, and perhaps, more doable half marathon, the total capacity is reached year after year.

While the opening date for the ballot system is not scheduled until November, now is the perfect time to set up your profile on the official website and ensure that your details are up-to-date. Here’s an overview of the 3 Step Entry Process for the Two Ocean’s Half Marathon 2017 (as per the OMTOM website):

Step 1: Runners interested in participating in the 21km Half Marathon will have the opportunity to submit their online ballot between 1st and 10th November 2016

Step 2: Two computer-generated draws will take place. The first on 11th November 2016 for licensed members of any South African running club. The second on 18th November for the general public.

Step 3: Successful applicants will receive an email confirming their entry, along with details on how to make payment. Licensed members will have until 4pm on 17th November 2016 to pay the balance, and everyone else has until 4pm on 24th November 2016.

There are only 16,000 tickets up for grabs, so make sure you diarise the above dates and secure your entry!
